WARC FELLOWS
A Program of the West African Research Center
During the upcoming academic year (2006-2007), three fellowships will be offered. Although the current proposal applies to 2006-2007 only, WARA hopes to continue this program over time and is exploring funding by WARC to promote and support research activities among West African graduate students.
WARC Fellow Benefits :
Each fellow will have office space at WARC, use of a computer, and access to
its many facilities. Fellows will receive a stipend equivalent to $1000 USD,
to cover research expenses (e.g., transport, photocopy, scanning, office supplies,
etc.) and will be disbursed on a monthly basis for the period of the fellowship.
WARC Fellow Responsibilities :
WARC Fellows will be expected to be in residence at the center 3 to 4 days a
week. In addition, they will be expected to help the Center in the following
areas:
· help organize talks and other types of research/academic activities
· draft reports on talks, researchers' seminars etc., to be submitted
to the WARC Director for use in highlights and monthly reports
· attend WARC events on research and academic matters
· offer a mini-workshop on their research findings at or near the end
of their residency
· submit a written report (ten pages minimum) on their research to WARC
shortly before the end of their residency
· file a copy of their dissertation, when completed, with WARC
Note: Regular payments of the Fellow stipend will be conditional upon fulfillment of the above responsibilities.
Who may apply ?
Candidates must
· be 3e Cycle (PhD) students, in the process of writing or completing
their doctoral dissertations
· be duly enrolled at University Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD)
· have West African nationality
What is the application process ?
Applicants should submit a dossier, including two copies of each of the following
documents, to : "la Direction de la Coopération de l’UCAD" at the
latest on Friday, July 28 at 4pm..
· a two-page summary presentation of the candidate's dissertation project
· a statement of how being a WARC Fellow will contribute to the candidate's
work and how the candidate's work will contribute to WARC an to the furtherance
of knowledge.
· two letters of support from scholars or researchers familiar with your
dissertation project, including one letter from your dissertation supervisor
· proof of registration at UCAD
· official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended,
including UCAD
· passport copy or other proof of nationality
What are the selection criteria ?
The selection committee will take into consideration the quality and feasibility
of the proposal, letters of support and recommendation, and academic record.
In addition to these criteria, the selection committee will, over time, attend
to creating gender diversity and regional representation among grantees.
What is the selection process ?
The announcement for this opportunity will be posted by the end of June and
the deadline for receipt of applications will be the end of July. All application
materials must be submitted in duplicate to "la Direction de la Coopération
de l’UCAD".
Results will be announced at the beginning of October, and Fellows will take up residence at WARC as soon as possible thereafter. The term of Residence will run through June 2007 for an approximate duration of 8 months.
