CODESRIA, the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa is headquartered in Dakar, Senegal. It was established in 1973 as an independent Pan-African research organisation with primary focus on the social sciences, broadly defined. It is recognised not only as the pioneer African social research organisation but also as the top non-govenmental centre of social knowledge production on the continent.

In the 1960s independence days of most African coutnries, there was no school of documentary information science in French speaking coutnries in the South of the Shara. Being aware of this deficiency, in 1963 UNESCO decided to open at Dakar, Senegal the first library school in French-speaking black Africa. In 1967, the Centre was renamed The Librarian, Archivists, and Documentalists School linked to Dakar University in a methdo with a status of University Institute. In 1967, only a librarian section was open; followed by the Archivist section in 1977, and then the Documentalist section in 1975.

L'Institut fondamental d'Afrique Noire (IFAN) at Université Cheikh Anta Diop has several missions assigned by decree n°1945 of August 19, 1936. These are "the scientific study of Africa in general, and l'Afrique Occidentale Française (AOF) in particular, of the countries, their inhabitants, their history, their evolution, their resources, and their output."
